A robot is basically a machine which can be programmed. We all as children have owned or seen a toy robot, well now what started as a fantasy in a fictional story written by Asimov in 1942 has become a reality. No mention of cartoon and film robots would be complete without STAR WARS and BIONIC MAN and BIONIC WOMAN (there is a new version of this very popular series starting in 2008 )

STAR WARS.   (1977)

The first Star Wars film came out in 1977 and had children and adults alike in awe.  There may wellhave been science fiction books around in the 60s and before that who mentioned robots and space people but this film brought the future of space and Robots into the attention of everybody.

Adults and children alike sat up and took notice.and warmed to the charactors.

..Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, Grand Moff Tarkin, Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO, R2D2, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Chief Jawa ( to name but some) became household names overnight.   The time was right and people could at last not only enjoy the film but take on board Robots and Robotics and Space Exploration.

Today many other figures have been added to the mix and Star Wars is a multi million pound business but for most people seeing Chewbacca and C-3PO  changed peoples ideas on space and what exactly was 'out there' and the concept of Good and Bad robots imerged and with that how we could use all this technology.

Nobody could have guessed that within forty years Robots and Robotic Technology would be doing everything from painting our cars, to assisting us in space, exploring under our seas and even helping our doctors and dentists.
